Javier Solana, the High Representative for the European Common, Foreign and Security Policy, has called for more substance in talks prior to the peace conference in November. The European Union has remained relatively quiet on the Middle East peace process of late, with the main focus being on the United States and Israel. The US has been criticized for not doing enough to ensure the peace conference is a success, and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been downplaying expectations of a final agreement being produced at the gathering. Today Olmert said he didn't expect a final peace agreement with the Palestinians until another 20 or 30 years. But I doubt that the Israeli government really wants to have the problem of Islamic terrorism plaguing future generations. As President Mahmoud Abbas has stated, the "resistance" will not end until Israel has removed every Jewish stone from Yesha (land captured during the Six Day War). In spite of Olmert's efforts to downplay expectations of a quick agreement, he has apparently agreed to the handing over of East Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority. Quote: "The chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last week - and told her that Prime Minister Olmert agrees, finally, to turn eastern Jerusalem into the capital of a future state of Palestine. So reports the PA newspaper Al Hayat Al Jadeeda, quoting an unnamed "senior Palestinian source." Abbas reportedly told Rice that Olmert had agreed to the demand in an Olmert-Abbas meeting a couple of days before. Another Olmert-Abbas meeting is planned for next week, the paper reports. The Bible states that "half of the city shall go forth into captivity", Zechariah 14:2, and if the Palestinians stick to their guns (no pun intended), it is quite possible that will literally be half of Jerusalem. Meanwhile, Javier Solana is stressing the need to agree on the fundamental issues, including the division of Jerusalem... Quote: "Speaking ahead of talks in New York by members of the so-called Middle East quartet on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, Solana said it was essential that progress was made. "The issues that are fundamental have been stated already many, many times," Solana said as the members of the quartet -- the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia -- began two hours of talks. "We have to go beyond the mere stating of the issues and try to put some more meat on every issue," he said. "Water, borders, security, Jerusalem, refugees -- those are the fundamental issues that have to be resolved at the end of the day," he said, adding: "We can not afford a failure." "Without any doubt, it would be going back several years. We cannot afford that to happen," he added. Clearly the international community will not let this issue lie dormant another 20-30 years. Scripturally they cannot, for the Lord said "this generation shall not pass until all these things are fulfilled", Matthew 24:34. Some Christians interpret that to be the establishment of Israel in 1948, and count 70 years being a generation. Some Christians count from 1967, the date Israel recaptured East Jerusalem, and count 40 years as the length of a generation. In any case, our generation has witnessed prophecy being fulfilled, in the budding of God's fig tree - Israel. World leaders are now pressing for the division of God's land and the division of God's Holy City, according to the prophesies of Joel, Zechariah and Revelation. Perhaps it will not be too long before an agreement will be formulated, which will be strengthened by the Antichrist. Today's news, with a European leader urging agreement on the division of God's land, shows us just how far we have come. Matthew 24:44-46 Source Jerusalem Post, YNet News, Arutz, EU Business |
