German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the establishment of a political union in Europe in a public address on German television. She made the comments ahead of an European summit at the end of this month, where EU leaders are expected to agree on some sort of plan to deal with the ever-deepening eurozone crisis.

Greece is facing the prospect of holding fresh elections this month, after its anti-austerity parties were unable to form a government. The elections will ultimately decide whether Greece stays in the eurozone. Germany fears that a Greek exit from the single currency could damage international confidence in the Euro and prompt other countries with large debts such as Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland to withdraw. But the alternative, Germany having to underwrite the Greek economy, is as equally distasteful to the German Chancellor. Merkel has argued strongly against the issuing of euro-bonds, which would allow all the members of the eurozone to collectively bear the burden of debt incurred by the Mediterranean states. Instead the German Chancellor is calling for the establishment of a political union, which would enforce a single European economic policy, with the goal of preventing a similar disaster from happening in the future.

Quote: “"We need not just a currency union; we also need a so-called fiscal union, more common budget policies. And we need above all a political union," she added. "That means that we must, step by step as things go forward, give up powers to Europe as well."

One thing I will say is that global 'crises' have always been used as an excuse to drive further political integration in Europe. You may remember the energy crisis we had a few years ago, when Russia cut its gas supplies to the Ukraine, creating a knock-on effect in Europe. Javier Solana, former High Representative for the European Common, Foreign and Security Policy, remarked at the time that it is in all our interest that we maximise co-ordination in the external area and speak with one voice". In response to the crisis he called for the European Union to be given a seat on the UN Security Council, a request which was later granted through the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. This latest financial crisis is no exception. Further European integration is constantly presented by EU politicians as the only viable option. It seems that the European project has become the golden calf of the political elite. Everybody knows it's just a dumb idol, but nobody wants to be the one to admit it.

Unfortunately further political integration is not the answer to Europe's problems. Globalists will argue that if only we had global governance, there would be peace and prosperity. But that all depends on who you have running the government. The United Nations building in New York houses a memorial that has the words from Isaiah 2:4 emblazoned on it, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more”. But sadly they refuse to recognize the one of whom it speaks in the first part of the verse, “And he shall judge among the nations”. The Bible teaches us that there is only one Man who has the right and the ability to rule this world. And that person is the Lord Jesus Christ. God says of Him in Ezekiel 21:27, “Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him”. It is spoken of Him in Isaiah 9:26-27, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end”. And David speaks of Him in Psalms 72:8, “In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth”. What a difference the reign of Christ will make on this earth! But does He reign in your heart? Have you trusted in Him for salvation? He is waiting for you today. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved (Acts 16:31).

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
